Claim visiting parents as dependents for tax

This one is a very quick informational post. I came across this information while discussing it with a friend and thought this might be useful for others.

You can claim the people (parents, in-laws and others) who are visiting United States as dependents for tax purposes (only if you have sponsored them in the first place) if they stay for at least 183 days in US in any tax year. So, next time you go to file the taxes, remember it.

It is a very important information that you have provided here. I have never heard of such a law. It is quite a strange one and I guess, it might be the first of its kind. Thank you for sharing the information.

it only becomes a hassle when u read carefully. People (including visitors) who stay beyond 180 days have to file taxes. That is why visitors visa are given for a max of 180 days (Uncle Sam is no fool). So in the end.. it is like taking money from one and giving to another. Check with Tax accountant
